in Calfornia -Mother's Life- mixed-media installation, dimentions variable video camera, cloth, resin, tricycle (2000)  In the photo of Risa Campaign in California, you see me, my mother, and her new partner. My mother lives apart from me for about 20 years, which brought complicated mental distance between us. Though the pleasure of seeing her remains unchanged, the circumstances which she is in has totally changed from those when she lived with me. I speak only Japanese. Her partner talks in English. She speaks melange of the two languages for us. Symbolically, at suppertime we watch Japanese TV programs superimposed with English texts. However, Risa Campaign #8 changes the whole situation. This non-human alien substance quietly denies the family concept which each of the three prepared. Patting #8 on the head, talking to it, riding on it, and sitting at the dinner table with it. We share rich experiences. #8 proved that a sense of unity as a family is not developed only when each of family lives together, or when each has genetic code in common. |
